Richard's 2nd round match against Lleyton Hewitt started with a love game. He hit a spectacular forehand around the net-post in the second game which he managed to bring to deuce. From then on errors crept in and Hewitt ran away with the set 6-1. Richard had medical treatment for the blister in his right palm in the changeover after 2-1 Hewitt.
He managed to hold his service game with two aces, but the inevitabele followed quickly- Retirement when serving at 2-3.
