Today, the French Tennis Federation announced that Richard Gasquet was the number one ranked Frenchman in tennis. For the sixth consecutive year, Amelie Mauresmo is the number one ranked French lady.
Despite his season ending early due to injury, this announcement caps off a super year for Richard which saw him reach the semifinals of Monte Carlo, defeating world number one Roger Federer on the way. Richard continued to impress by making the finals of TMS Hamburg, and then winning his first title at Nottingham, England. In July, Richard's efforts were rewarded as he led the French team in their Davis Cup quarterfinal against Russia.
Richard usurped Grosjean from the top sopt, and is the youngest ever French number one, reaching the ranking at 19 years and 4 months. He joins the legends, René Lacoste, Bernard Destremau and Yannick Noah, who also reached the number one French ranking in their twentieth year.
