Richard lost his semifinal to Ernests Gulbis 3-6 2-6. The Latvian was in huge form, notably on serve and went on to win the Marseille title.

Richard himself admitted after the match that Gulbis was too good for him on that day. The Latvian served with incredible speed and precision, his slowest first serve for the whole match was 195 km/h and most were beyond 210.

Richard got broken early in both sets and had no answer to the Latvian's power. Richard will finally have a break before switching to the US hard courts in Indian Wells.
