Richard lead his compatriot Gilles Simon 7-6 1-0* when the latter hurt his ankle and had to retire.

Richard still might not be 100% physically, but there were clear signs of improvement in this match. His serve speed was higher and overall his shots had more power and penetration.

He will face Tomas Berdych in the final on Saturday .
