Richard had to work hard to defeat Marcel Granollers, world number 2 in doubles, to reach the second round of Wimbledon. The score was 6-7 6-4 7-5 6-4. His next opponent will be the Japanese Go Soeda.
In the first set, Richard wasted too many breakpoints to impose himself right from the start. The set went to a breaker and the Spaniard, who showed off his volleying skills, came out on top of it 7-2.
The second set started like the first. Richard could not use four breakpoints in Granoller's first service game and the Spaniard continued to show his clutch volleying skills. Richard finally broke in the fourth game, but it was hard work to close out the set 6-4. In the third set, Granollers broke Richard in the third game, but lost his advantage straight away. At the end of the set, it was Richard who could break for a 7-5 victory.
Richard managed another break right at the start of the fourth set, but Granollers did not collapse, he still served at more than 70% first serves. However, Richard remained focused and used his second match point for a 6-7 6-4 7-5 6-4 victory.
