The bookmakers got it wrong. They had the young Australian winning, but Richard defeated Bernard Tomic 7-6 6-2.
The match was balanced at the beginning, but Richard achieved a break for 4-2. When he had to serve out the set, the first serve was not clicking and though he saved three breakpoints, he had to concede the rebreak. The set went to a breaker, which Richard took home confidently 7-1. Tomic became more and more impatient, trying to hit the winner too early and commiting many errors while Richard timed his attacks more carefully and was never in danger for a 7-6 6-2 victory. Richard's next opponent is the Pole Jerzy Janowicz.
