Richard has pulled off one of the biggest wins of his career, defeating Marat Safin in the first round of Lyon. Richard overcame the Russian 6-4, 7-6(5).

Serving eight aces, Richard had a consistently solid first serve of 67%, and was able to save the two break points held against him. Attacking the Safin second serve, Richard won over half the points on his opponent's serve.

In the second round, Richard will face Dick Norman. This will be the first meeting between the two.
