Richard started well in Melboume. He defeated Carlos Berloq in less than two hours 6-1 6-3 6-1. His next opponent is the winner of Kavcic/Duckworth.
Richard had to face a breakpoint in the third game of the first set, but this was to be the only one for the whole match. Aggressive and determined, notably on the forehand, he broke the Argentinian twice and sealed the first set in less than half an hour.
Berloq took a toilet break, but this did not help his game, he committed many errors and Richard benefitted with two breaks to take the set 6-3.
In the third set, Richard took the match into his own hands. More adventourous again, he broke Berloq in the forth game and the final break for a 6-1 6-3 6-1 victory was a formality.
