Richard lost his first round match in Roland Garros against Andy Murray 4-6 6-7 6-4 6-2 6-1.
Not favoured by the schedule which gave him only one day to recover after his victory in Nice, Richard played on a level his fans have long been waiting for. All the shots the game of tennis has to offer were to be seen. It needed the insight of a careful observer to see the tiredness behind.
Fatigue fully struck after he lost his break advantage in the third set. One could still see him trying, but there was simply no gas left in the tank. Murray won the third set and the match, but Richard recieved a well deserved ovation from the Roland Garros crowds.
He is scheduled to play doubles with Sébastien Grosjean and will then move on to the green grass of Queens.
