Tommy Haas outlasted 12th-seeded Richard Gasquet on Tuesday for a mini-upset. With only 41 winners to Gasquet’s 74, Haas was the steadier of the two, winning, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
Gasquet, a 22-year-old Frenchman known for snapping winners with his wicked one-handed backhand, has been one of the young talents to emerge in recent years. But today, he was the highest seed on the men’s side to fall.
It was a solid victory for Haas, a 30-year-old veteran of the Tour who six years ago was ranked No. 2.
